Cake Race 2019_Aug

Sterling Martin (l) and Gary Andrew (r) - Sterling ran this year's Cake Race sixty years after he won the race his freshman year. He went on to serve his alma mater in a variety of capacities over the years. Gary Andrew served as the track and cross country coach at Davidson for a number of years.

These four first year students were all smiles before the 2019 Cake Race. Turns out they had reason to smile, they came across the finish line first, hand-in-hand for a four-way tie.

And they're off. . .the men's start of the 2019 Cake Race with members of the Davidson Class of 2023.

Sixty years after he won the cake race, Davidson alumna Sterling Martin laced up his running shoes and hit the pavement again for an "anniversary run." And while he didn't cross the line first this time, he inspired everybody on hand for this year's race. Long-time Davidson Cross Country coach Gary Andrew joined Sterling for the race.
